Hi Subscribers,

We saw the first batch of road races at the UCI Road World Championships in Zurich today and the junior men and women put on a show with two electrifying races in atrociously wet conditions.

Qualifying for a Worlds as a junior is a massive achievement for any young rider, so everyone who took to the start line deserves huge credit and we’ve picked out seven conclusions from Thursday’s action.

We analyse the winning performances in both races, delve into how important recruitment at a junior level is for WorldTour teams, and look ahead to the elite races that take place this weekend.

Ferguson is more than just a junior phenomenon

We’ll start with Cat Ferguson, and the British rider picking up her second world title in just a matter of days to cement herself as the undoubted star of this year’s championships.

The 18-year-old, who blasted to victory in the time trial on Tuesday produced another faultless performance in Thursday’s road race, weathering storms both literally and figuratively as the rain poured down and her rivals attempted to dismantle her defences.
