Analysing the teams chasing Tom Pidcock
Who else could make the move as part of the rider's entourage?
Ineos Grenadiers remain in control of Tom Pidcock’s future. However, following the rider’s shock deselection from Il Lombardia, and the storm it created over the weekend, it’s clearer than ever that all isn’t well within the British camp.
Pidcock has a contract with Ineos Grenadiers until the end of 2027 but he’s never looked more of an outsider on the team, and with squads circling, a transfer looks on the cards.
Q36.5 Pro Cycling are confident of nudging a deal over the line and Ineos Grenadiers would surely prefer to see their star rider drop down a division rather than join a direct rival. Meanwhile, Visma-Lease a Bike and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe remain in the frame.
All three teams have positive and negative aspects when it comes to a possible transfer.
Q36.5 Pro Cycling would mean a lack of Grand Tour racing in 2025, while the two WorldTour options would involve compromises over race schedule and leadership.
Then there’s the question mark over Pidcock’s entourage, which likely includes long-term confidant and coach Kurt Bogaerts, possibly a mechanic, such as Rune Kristensen from Ineos, and maybe even a soigneur.
And who could forget Pidcock’s dogs Acorn and Chesnut, who joined the comms offensive this weekend by posting: “We drove 12 hours to watch Dad race but instead we’ll be spending 2 extra days with him for our family holiday.”
How or why this post wasn’t picked up through the mainstream press is a mystery.
Rest assured, we’ve asked Ineos for a response to the dog’s statement and no doubt they’re in the war room right now scrambling for a response.
For now, though, we’ll look at the pros and cons for each of the three teams and analyse whether Pidcock’s possible entourage could be assimilated.
