Hello subscribers,

Stage 1 of the Tour de France got off to a flyer with Romain Bardet and Frank van den Broek stealing the show with a memorable 1-2 in Rimini.

The Frenchman took his first stage win in seven years, and the first yellow jersey of his career. Not bad for a rider who announced he’ll retire next June.

Elsewhere Mark Cavendish struggled in the heat - in fact his Astana Qazaqstan team had a day to forget - and Wout van Aert picked up third.

Read on for your daily Tour de France bulletin.

dsm-firmenich PostNL and Romain Bardet start the Tour with a banger

Is there a better underdog team in the world when it comes to executing a plan and pulling off tactical genius than dsm-firmenich PostNL?

Please, let me know if there is because when they’re good, they’re very very good. On stage 1 of the Tour de France, the Dutch squad were impeccable, and even in their wildest dreams wouldn’t have written a script as exciting, heartwarming and ultimately as successful as this.
