Egan Bernal’s (Ineos Grenadiers) season was turned on its head on Monday, with the Colombian forced out of the Clásica Jaén after crashing and breaking a collarbone inside the final 15km of the race.

The 28-year-old recently won the national road race and time trial championships in Colombia and made his European debut on Monday, joining a strong Ineos Grenadiers team on the start line in Spain.

Bernal was in the thick of the action when the crash occurred inside the final 15km of racing. While his teammate Michał Kwiatkowski went on to win the race, the British team left the one-day event with a bitter taste in their mouths as Bernal was taken to a local hospital for checks.
