Exclusive: Bradley Wiggins interview
The former rider talks about the BC Hall of Fame, Ineos' decline, Pidcock's transfer and helping a new generation of kids into the sport
Hi Subscribers,
Back in the day, I’d have kicked off this interview with the best quote possible. Clicks, SEO, it was all about online engagement.
Nowadays I don’t have to do that and it’s genuinely a relief at times. When you interview a rider the juiciest parts often come late into the conversation, and from a traditional news angle, that’s what happened last night when I interviewed Bradley Wiggins.
However, some context is in order. He was at the London 3 Day to meet and greet fans and support his son Ben, who was competing. Given that he was in part there for family reasons I felt a bit uncomfortable writing up a ‘Wiggins on Ineos’ demise headline’, and instead I’ve run the interview in the chronological order in which I asked him questions.
As a journalist that’s not best practice but it certainly makes me feel more at ease given the fact Wiggins didn’t have to talk and he doesn’t need to wake up to what some would consider a shitty headline.
Don’t worry, the Pidcock/Ineos content is all in there but we talked about other topics too, notably his inclusion into the British Cycling Hall of Fame and his Project PAU collaboration, which helps disadvantaged kids into cycling.
Finally, a big thanks to the organisers of the London 3 Day, who granted me accreditation. The events I watched looked great, and I was able to interview several riders for the Substack. They’ll be out next week.
For now, here’s the Wiggins story and I hope you have a great weekend.
