Fresh from his stunning display in Paris-Nice, American rider Matteo Jorgenson will turn his attention towards the Spring Classics, with E3 Saxo Bank Classic his first cobbles appointment since Opening Weekend.

The 25-year-old will co-lead a strong Visma-Lease a Bike team alongside Wout van Aert on Friday, with the pair hoping to put in a confidence-boosting performance ahead of the Tour of Flanders. For Van Aert, it’s the Belgian’s first race since Opening Weekend, with the Belgian returning from a stint at altitude.

Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed the dual leadership role for both riders at the sports directors’ meeting on Thursday ahead of the race.

“That’s logical because for Wout, it’s his first race since altitude camp, and he feels good, but still, you need to see how you are for your first race after travelling,” sport director Arthur van Dongen told us.

“With Matteo, he’s in good shape, and we hope to have both leaders and play cards with Tiesj Benoot and Dylan van Baarle during the race. Normally, in E3 Saxo Classic, there are no surprises. Everyone knows where it all happens, and it’s such a hard race that the legs will decide,” he added.

Jorgenson’s rise up the ranks at Visma-Lease a Bike has been rapid and impressive. Since joining the team at the start of 2024, he’s won Paris-Nice twice, finished eighth in the Tour de France and won Dwars door Vlaanderen.
