Matteo Jorgenson: I need another year to prove myself before leading at a Grand Tour 🐝

Matteo Jorgenson was arguably Visma-Lease a Bike’s best bit of business ahead of the 2024 season. The super-team signed him from Movistar on the back of an impressive 2023, and he went from strength to strength last season, winning Dwars door Vlaanderen and Paris-Nice, and further establishing himself as a super-domestique and a future Grand Tour contender.
The 25-year-old was second on GC at the Dauphiné, behind Primož Roglič, and then went to the Tour de France as right-hand man to Jonas Vingegaard. He was best of the rest behind Tadej Pogačar on stage 19’s summit finish at Isola 2000, fourth on stage 21’s hilly time trial to Nice, and finished in eighth place overall.
The American will start his season this year by contesting both races on Opening Weekend, before heading back to Paris-Nice and then racing the Flemish Classics. He suggested a trip to the World Championships in Rwanda was unlikely due to the logistics involved.
Like in 2024, he said that his main role this season will continue to be as a super-domestique, and he made it clear that he didn’t intend to rush his progress in order to compete for Grand Tour glory himself.
“I’d like to try to win a one-day race, try to win a stage race, and improve in a Grand Tour,” he told us exclusively at the Visma-Lease a Bike training camp earlier this month.
