Despite being out of contract at the end of 2025, Michael Matthews has no intentions of retiring, with the 34-year-old keen to extend his time in the pro peloton.
According to the Australian, his representatives and Jayco AlUla are already in talks over a new deal, and the veteran has unfinished business when it comes to winning a Monument.
“There are talks already,” he told us and a small gathering of media at Jayco’s team camp in Altea, Spain.
“There are some finer details to see, like the length of how long I’ll stay, but it’s looking pretty good to continue, but we’ll see. Things can change. We’re now in December, and if the team wants to go in a different direction… but at the moment, everyone is happy with me for the moment. It looks good, but obviously, options are on the table,” he said.
Matthews is in his second stint with the Australian squad, having raced for the team between 2013 and 2016 before rejoining in 2021. Still one of the most consistent riders in the men’s WorldTour, he is also one of the most underrated - a stance that probably won’t be truly realised until his eventual retirement.
