The transfer season hasn’t really kicked off yet, but following Patrick Eddy’s spectacular victory at the Australian road championships last weekend, could we see our first in-season transfer this year?

There’s a chance, with the newly crowned Australian champion contemplating a return to the WorldTour if the right offer comes along. Eddy was deemed surplus to requirements at the end of last season, and with his contract at Picnic PostNL not renewed, the 23-year-old found himself, like many professional riders in the off-season, searching for options to continue his professional career.

With no opportunities in the WorldTour or Pro Tour ranks, Eddy was forced to lower his expectations, but he was eventually signed by the Continental squad Team Brennan to a one-year deal.

Some might have seen that as the beginning of the end for Eddy on the road, but he welcomed the move to Team Brennan as an opportunity, and his attitude paid off immediately with a surprise victory in the men’s road race, with the rider beating Luke Plapp and Jayco AlUla to the national champion’s jersey.
