Race analysis: Vingegaard resolves Algarve doubts as Roglič leaves content but with work to do 🇵🇹
The Dane took the final stage and the overall, while his Red Bull rival has no reason to panic
As anticipated, the general classification at the Volta ao Algarve hinged on a showdown during the stage 5 time trial and the ascent to Malhão.
By the time the dust settled and the sun began to dip below the horizon, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) had asserted his control, winning the stage by 11 seconds, with teammate Wout van Aert in second place and Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) securing third.
The result catapulted Vingegaard in yellow, with João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) in second and Lauren De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) finishing a respectable third.
Overnight leader Jan Christen lost significant time and fell to 10th place overall but exited the race with a memorable stage victory and a wealth of experience as general classification leader after taking stage 2. The 20-year-old will only get better.
By the time Vingegaard reached the podium, Grand Tour rival and former teammate Primož Roglič had already descended from the top of the Malhão and reached sanctuary on the Red Bull bus. His main objectives come slightly sooner than Vingegaard's this season, with the Slovenian targeting a second Giro d’Italia title, while Vingegaard is focusing all his efforts on yellow at the Tour de France.
