Reading between the lines, an Evenepoel Giro d’Italia challenge feels unlikely
The Belgian's sports director, Klaas Lodewyck, talks Tour de France build-up and areas of potential improvement
We still don’t know next year’s Giro d’Italia route details, and we might not find out for some time given the postponement of the 2025 race presentation but the chances of Remco Evenepoel racing both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France next season feel slim at best.
It must be pointed out that I obviously have no secret ‘in’ with the management at Soudal Quick-Step and that I’m basing that analysis on common sense, an interview with the Belgian’s trusted sports director Klaas Lodewyck, and perhaps an element of wishful thinking on my part. I want Evenepoel at the Tour next year because he was the most interesting GC rider on the podium, and he feels like the only legitimate contender to the Pogačar-Vingegaard rule we’ve had since 2020.
This year Evenepoel targeted the Tour for the first time in his career, finishing third on the podium behind Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. A podium spot, a white jersey, and a time trial stage win were huge achievements for the debutant and he went through a relatively classic Tour de France build-up, with a mix of stage races and just a single one-day race before the Grand Depart.
