The question had to be asked. He knew, his team knew it, and so did the media scrum that gathered for the Soudal Quick-Step rest day press conference, at which Remco Evenepoel took centre stage.
The bulk of the press conference revolved around the Tour, in which the Belgian currently sits third overall after 10 days of racing. However, one of the most gripping subplots within this race has surrounded the former Vuelta winnerβs long-term future.
For years, Evenepoel has been linked with a move away from Soudal, the team where he began his professional career, with Ineos Grenadiers and Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe being the two teams most consistently mentioned as potential destinations.
Recent reports on this substack and Escape Collective suggest that a transfer to Red Bull is closer than ever, with discussions ongoing about Evenepoel ending his current contract with Soudal and joining the German team next season, despite the rider still being under contract with his current team for the upcoming season. I had two sources who last week put the move at 70-80% complete.
