🇫🇷 Risk and reward: Picnic PostNL target 'relaxed GC' with Oscar Onley at the Tour de France
Team will focus on stage wins first and foremost but the Scot remains a GC card
In the team’s first Grand Tour post the Romain Bardet era, Picnic PostNL will target stage wins throughout this year’s Tour de France.
With two sprinters, a handful of breakaway options and veteran Warren Barguil, the team certainly have cards to play over the three-week race, but it’s Oscar Onley who heads into the race as the team’s standout rider.
The Scott was third at the recent Tour de Suisse and could be a potential candidate for the top ten on GC if the race opens up for him in the second half.
However, the team won’t be putting any undue pressure on the 22-year-old, who only made his Tour de France debut in 2024. Instead, Onley will race a ‘relaxed GC’ according to sports director Matt Wintson.
“We have to see how the race is going and how Oscar is. One thing that I don’t want to do is put a lot of pressure on him and say we’re going all-in for a GC. He’s always going to be better when he can have a day or two where the stress is a bit off and he can perform at his best on key days. I think that’s important for young riders who are still learning and developing. That’s why I’m talking about a relaxed GC,” Winston told us during a call this week.
