What next for the Tour de France top 10?
Analysing the performances and the next possible goals for this year's top performers
The 2024 Tour de France has drawn to a close after three pulsating and unforgettable weeks of racing. Tadej Pogačar made history, taking his third overall title and becoming the first rider in 26 years to complete the Giro-Tour double but the top ten was stacked with stories and narratives that didn’t just end on the finish line in Nice.
Here we look at the top-ten overall riders, analyse their performances and look ahead to what could be next for them.
1st. Tadej Pogačar
Team: UAE Team Emirates
Age: 25
Highlight of the 2024 Tour: Winning six stages, destroying the opposition and completing the Giro-Tour double
Tour report: We ran out of superlatives for the Slovenian some time ago but he raised the bar again after the most dominant Tour de France display in decades. This was reminiscent of Lance Armstrong back in 2004, when the American also won six stages, decimated the field and, like Pogačar, won three consecutive stages before sealing the overall. The Slovenian’s achievements are even more incredible than the American’s, given that he won the Giro d’Italia to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to secure the double. Where Pogačar goes from here is unclear - there’s little left for him to achieve in stage racing, other than perhaps aiming for a double-double in 2025 or a Tour-Vuelta challenge.
