Alexandre Vinokourov: Mark Cavendish racing in 2025 'makes no sense'
What could Cavendish's race schedule look like next season as he leaves the door open for another year?
It was supposed to happen in 2023, and it was supposed to happen again after this year’s Tour de France but there's now a glimmer of hope that Mark Cavendish’s racing career could extend into 2025 after the British rider refused to rule our racing the Tour of Britain next season.
The Tour de France legend raced with Astana Qazaqstan in 2023 and 2024 and picked up that elusive stage victory on stage 5 of this year’s race to carry him one clear of Eddy Merckx and onto 35 career stage wins.
At the time it was expected that the Tour would be 39-year-old’s final outing as a pro but he’s now set to take part in ASO’s end-of-season criteriums in the Far East.
While those events might not represent the pinnacle of competition, given their duration and how they play out, the British rider’s refusal to rule out racing in 2025 certainly raised questions over a possible career extension.
